The Experience

In a nutshell

Book a maternity, newborn or family photoshoot with me and you'll get natural, light-filled images of your family. How do I get these? By making your session a chilled-out affair. All you need to do is hang out together, cradle your bump, cuddle your baby, tickle the kids, giggle, run around and just relax and have fun. You might get a few gentle prompts from me but there'll be no awkward posing because we're looking for genuine moments and real smiles.

I also know that more often than not it is mum who takes all the photos and that means you're never in them. So I take extra care to make sure you get some lovely shots of you with your little ones. Shots that you won't want to delete, that you'll be proud to display and share. I promise!

Let's talk about style

How would I describe my style? Simple, natural family photography. No plain white backgrounds here. No forced posing. No blue jeans and white shirts for everyone. I strive to capture natural family images that look and feel like you. If that sounds like what you are looking for, then keep scrolling...

Once you've booked your photoshoot, we'll have a chat so I can find out a bit more about you and your lovely brood. That way I can tailor the session to you. I'll send you a guide with some tips for getting ready for your session and some advice on what to wear. We'll pick the date, time and the location. If you have a location in mind, great, if not I am happy to help with this. If you've booked a mini session, then the date and location is fixed. All you need to do is pick your time slot.

I allow about an hour for a newborn session or a bespoke family session but I don't clock watch. If we need extra time for changing nappies, giving the kids a snack, or a quick outfit change then that's what we need. It takes as long as it takes! Maternity sessions and Bitesize family sessions are about half an hour long, and a mini session is generally scheduled for 20 minutes.

I understand that it can be slightly terrifying if you aren't used to being in front of the camera, so I aim to keep it relaxed and fun. Because that's how we'll capture the sweetest, unscripted moments. I've got lots of fun games up my sleeve to get everyone in the mood! We'll bank a couple of everyone-smiling-and-looking-at-the camera shots, but my main focus will be getting natural, relaxed, fun photos of you just being you.

About 2 weeks after your session you'll get a link to an online gallery. Here you can view your images and decide which ones you would like to buy and whether you want to include any prints or artwork in your order. On the fence about prints? Here's why you should consider it...

So where will my session be?

As a family photographer I cover areas in Surrey, Sussex and Kent. Most of my family, maternity and newborn sessions take place outdoors. We have so many lovely places to have these photoshoots in the beautiful counties of Sussex, Surrey and Kent. I have a few locations up my sleeve if you need help choosing. Or if you have somewhere in mind just let me know. Travel is included within a 20 mile radius of RH7. I am more than happy to travel further a field for a small travel supplement to cover the extra time and costs involved.

When is the best time to do it?

I strongly suggest holding these early morning. Firstly, the light is better. The later in the day we do it, the higher the sun is in the sky and the harsher the light is. In addition, babies and younger children tend to be brighter and more alert in the mornings. And it also increases the liklihood that our chosen shoot location will not be too busy - no one wants an audience during their photoshoot! I tend to start my sessions at 9am or 9.30am but we can be flexible if needed.

When should I book?

Maternity photoshoots should ideally take place when you are between 32 - 37 weeks pregnant although I'm happy to do them whenever you feel is best. Newborn and baby sessions are for those under one years of age. Family photography sessions can be booked at anytime. Just give me a shout!

What should we wear?

This bit stresses most people out a little! After you've booked I will send you some information on what you should wear. In the meantime you can check out my boards on Pinterest for some ideas. The general rule of thumb though is that everyone should complement each other, but avoid anything too matchy matchy! And make sure you look like you! For younger kids, it might be an idea to have a spare set of clothes on hand. Just in case.

What if the weather is rubbish?

Well, we are in England so let's face it, that's a very real possibility! Blue skies and whispy clouds are of course lovely, but don't be put off by thicker cloud cover. Skies like these can make your photos really atmospheric. Whatever Mother Nature has in store for us, we can take a call the day before. If necessary we'll just reschedule for another time that's convenient for you.

How long will the session last?

Bespoke family and newborn photography sessions can generally be done in an hour or so. Its usually quite obvious when the kids have had enough! But I don't clock watch. It takes as long as it takes! Bitesize family and maternity sessions last about half an hour, and scheduled mini sessions are short and sweet at just 20 minutes long.

What happens after?

I will go home and spend some time choosing the best photos to tell your story. When they are ready I will send you an online gallery. For a bespoke session, it will contain around 25 beautifully retouched images. Bitesize and mini sessions contain around 10 imahes. This will typically take around 2 weeks. After you have had time to look through your gallery you can what you would like to buy.

Can I have all the images you take?

I have made a conscious decision not to offer packages that include vast numbers of images. I mean, what do you actually do with 50 odd images?! Instead, I spend a lot of time curating your gallery so that each image really counts and you don't end up with a load of shots that are all a bit similar to the last. No padding out just to hit that magic number. Quality, not quantity.

Choosing your family photographer is a big decision. I've answered some of the most common queries I get below but if there is anything else like you'd know please do give me a shout. I'd love to hear from you!
