As a Surrey family photographer, I’m always on the lookout for locations that offer variety, beauty, and space for children to explore. Tilgate Park in Crawley ticks every box.

Why Tilgate is a Fantastic Location for a Family Photoshoot Outdoors

Tilgate Park is a hidden gem for family photography. It offers so much variety in one place - woodlands, lakes, colourful gardens, open grassy areas and even a nature centre nearby if you want to make a day of it.

But in spring, Tilgate is extra special. The Peace Garden, a little oasis, is full of Azaleas and spring colour. These vivid pinks and purples aren’t just pretty, they add real depth and texture to your images and help bring out the natural joy of the moment.

There’s also the peaceful lake, winding paths, wooden bridges and pockets of daffodils and bluebells if you catch the right week. It’s one of those rare places where you can take a stroll and find multiple backdrops within minutes.

Why Spring Is a Perfect Time for a Family Photoshoot

Spring is all about fresh starts, longer days and warmer light. And it's a dream for photography. Everything starts to bloom, the trees begin to green up and the light feels soft and warm.

For families, it’s also a lovely time to be outdoors. Children are more relaxed when they can run around, explore and be themselves. In spring, the weather is usually mild enough for light layers without being too hot or too cold. It makes for happy kids and relaxed, natural smiles. Just what I love to capture.

It’s also the perfect season for lighter colour palettes in your outfits - think soft pastels, denim, creams or subtle florals which all look beautiful against the lush spring backgrounds.
